Daiwa BG explained: 2026 BG LT and BG SW, plus the BG MQ and classic BG

Illustrative image, not the exact model.
Daiwa US currently sells four spinning reels with BG in the name. This page covers the newest pair, launched for 2026: the BG LT (LT2500D-XH, LT3000D-XH and LT4000D-CXH), which Daiwa says is built for inshore and light-surf fishing, and the BG SW (5000-H to 20000), which gets a gasket-sealed waterproof aluminum frame and body cover. The classic BG and the BG MQ are still listed and are explained below.
Every 2026 BG LT lists at $179.99, and the BG SW runs from $199.99 to $279.99. For the most common cross-brand matchup, see Daiwa BG vs PENN Battle.

Which Daiwa BG is which
One quirk of the current lineup: the BG MQ predates the 2026 lines but lists higher than both of them. On paper, the BG MQ is the only one with a monocoque body, while the 2026 BG SW is the only one Daiwa describes as having a gasket-sealed waterproof frame.
- Classic BG ($149.99 to $199.99): machined aluminum housing, screw-in handle and Digigear, in sizes from 1500 to 8000 with 6BB + 1 bearings. Daiwa describes the series as spanning ultralight freshwater to heavy big-game saltwater models.
- BG MQ ($249.99 to $349.99): launched in 2020 as the next generation of BG, with a one-piece MONOCOQUE aluminum body and no sideplate screws, ATD drag and sizes from 2500D-H to 20000.
- 2026 BG LT ($179.99): AIRDRIVE DESIGN with the AIRDRIVE ROTOR, a solid-wire AIRDRIVE BAIL and TOUGH DIGIGEAR, in three sizes for inshore and light surf.
- 2026 BG SW ($199.99 to $279.99): POWERDRIVE DESIGN with an OVERSIZED POWER DIGIGEAR, a reinforced POWERDRIVE ROTOR and ATD TOUGH carbon drag, from 5000-H to 20000.
BG 4000 and BG 5000: why the size numbers changed
The 2026 BG LT uses Daiwa's LT sizing, where the number maps to a fixed spool diameter. Daiwa Australia's sizing table shows that old Daiwa numbers sit on a different scale: an old 2500 matches an LT3000 in spool diameter, an old 3000 matches an LT5000, and an old 4000 matches an LT6000. The LT4000D-CXH also carries the -C code, meaning a body one size smaller than its spool, and D for a deep spool.
In practice, someone replacing a classic BG 4000 should compare line ratings rather than the number. The LT4000D-CXH weighs 9.9 oz, has 26.4 lb of drag and is rated for 30 lb braid at 200 yd. The biggest jump in the 2026 range comes next: the BG SW 5000-H weighs 14.8 oz because it belongs to the separate POWERDRIVE-based BG SW line rather than being the next size on the LT frame.
Where the BG sits in Daiwa's spinning lineup
Below the BG, the Eliminator ($129.99 to $179.99) is Daiwa's other aluminum-frame reel for fresh and salt, under its Hardbodyz concept. The Freams LT ($159.99 to $189.99) is a hybrid freshwater and inshore reel with MAGSEALED protection.
Above it, the Saltist Back Bay LT ($249.99 to $269.99) is aimed at inshore and back-bay fishing, and the Saltist MQ ($359.99 to $489.99) carries a Monocoque body and Magsealed protection from a 2500 up to a 20000. BG generations (US model codes)
| Code | US year | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| BG BG | — | Machined aluminum housing with screw-in handle and Digigear (gears Daiwa says are 20% to 40% larger than competitors'); sizes BG1500 to BG8000, 6BB + 1. Still listed on daiwa.us. |
| BG BG MQ | 2020 | Introduced as the next generation of BG with a one-piece MONOCOQUE aluminum body (no sideplate screws), allowing a larger drive gear. Added ATD (Advanced Tournament Drag) and nine rubber seal points per Daiwa's launch release. Range extended to BGMQ20000 for bluefin tuna; sizes BGMQ2500D-H to BGMQ20000. |
| BG 2026 BG LT / BG SW | 2026 | Line split into BG LT (2500-4000, AIRDRIVE DESIGN, TOUGH DIGIGEAR) and BG SW (5000-20000, POWERDRIVE DESIGN, OVERSIZED POWER DIGIGEAR, ATD TOUGH). BG SW gets a gasket-sealed waterproof aluminum frame and body cover; Daiwa describes both lines as improving on the foundation of their predecessor. Bearings published as 5BB, 1RB (BG SW, BG LT 2500) and 1CRBB, 4BB, 1RB (BG LT 3000/4000), versus 6BB + 1 on BG MQ. |
US vs Japan (JDM) version
In Japan this reel is sold as the 26 BG SW (26BG SW).
- Japan lists power-gear models SW6000-P and SW8000-P (4.9:1) that are not in the US BG SW lineup.
- The US lineup includes BGSW18000, which is not in Daiwa Japan's 26 BG SW spec table (Japan: 5000-H, 6000-P, 6000-H, 8000-P, 8000-H, 10000-H, 14000-H, 20000).
- Daiwa Japan lists the release as October 2026 for 5000-14000 and November 2026 for 20000.
- Daiwa Japan's BG listing covers only BG SW; there is no Japanese counterpart to the US 2026 BG LT (2500-4000).
- Japanese MSRP (tax excluded): 25,900 yen (5000-6000), 31,100 yen (8000-14000), 36,300 yen (20000).

FAQ
What is the difference between the Daiwa BG and BG MQ?
The classic BG has a machined aluminum housing, a screw-in handle and Digigear. The BG MQ, from 2020, uses a one-piece MONOCOQUE aluminum body with no sideplate screws, which allowed a larger drive gear, plus ATD drag and nine rubber seal points.
Is there still a Daiwa BG 4000?
Yes, in two forms. The classic BG is still listed on daiwa.us in sizes that include a 4000, and the 2026 BG LT has the LT4000D-CXH. They use different size scales, so compare line ratings rather than the number.
What is the Daiwa BG 5000 now?
In the 2026 range it is the BG SW 5000-H: 5.7:1, 14.8 oz and 26.4 lb of drag, at $199.99. The classic BG also still includes a 5000 size.
Do I need mono backing on the 2026 BG?
Daiwa says no. Both the 2026 BG LT and BG SW use a spool with a braid-ready gasket that eliminates the need for backing.
Is the US BG SW the same as Japan's 26 BG SW?
The lineups overlap but differ. Japan adds power-gear 6000-P and 8000-P models, and the US adds an 18000 that is not in Daiwa Japan's table. Japan has no counterpart to the US 2026 BG LT.
