PENN Spinfisher VII: sizes, versions and Spinfisher vs Slammer

Illustrative image, not the exact model.

The Spinfisher VII is PENN's IPX5-sealed saltwater spinning reel: PENN says the sealing keeps saltwater out of the gearbox and drag system. It was shown at ICAST 2023 and announced for September availability that year, in sizes from 2500 to 10500, at $209.95 to $339.95 for the standard models.

The Spinfisher sits between the Battle and the Slammer in PENN's lineup, and it shares the Slammer's size numbers and line ratings, which makes the two easy to confuse. The last section below lays out what actually separates them, and Battle vs Spinfisher vs Slammer adds the cheaper Battle IV to the comparison.

Spinfisher VII sizes and what PENN suggests for each

PENN's Reel Size Guide runs in steps of 500 and assigns each size a fishing type. Applied to the Spinfisher's sizes, it reads like this:

  • 2500: light inshore (trout, flounder, redfish, jack, snook). The lightest Spinfisher at 11 oz in retailer specs, with 15 lb of drag.
  • 3500: inshore, medium fish, with cobia added to the species list.
  • 4500: inshore, pier and nearshore, adding tarpon and barracuda. Drag steps up to 20 lb.
  • 5500: nearshore and offshore, with mahi added. This is where weight rises sharply, to 19 oz from 12.8 oz on the 4500.
  • 6500 to 8500: nearshore, surf and offshore for tarpon, shark, mahi, tuna and wahoo; PENN adds sailfish from the 8500 class.
  • 9500 and 10500: heavy surf and extreme surf in PENN's guide, and trophy fish. The 10500 is rated for 50 lb of drag and 80 lb braid at 540 yd.

Live Liner, Long Cast and bail-less versions

PENN sells three variants as separate products, which is why they do not all appear in the standard spec table above.

The Live Liner (2500, 4500, 6500 and 8500, $229.95 to $339.95) adds PENN's Live Liner feature to the IPX5 reel. The Long Cast (5500, 6500 and 7500, $289.95 to $339.95) adds the Leveline Oscillation System. The bail-less 4500 and 6500 appear on the standard page as BLS models with the same line ratings as the bailed versions; the retailer spec tables used for weight do not list them.

Spinfisher VI vs VII

The VI (2018) was the big redesign: HT-100 drag washers in a fully sealed spool and IPX5 sealing throughout an all-metal design. It used a machined aluminum main gear on the 5500 and smaller sizes and brass only from the 6500 up. The VII's main change is all-brass gearing across the range, cut with PENN's upgraded CNC Gear Technology. Prices on pennfishing.com have also risen since the VII's launch.

Spinfisher vs Slammer: what separates them

Size for size, the Spinfisher VII and Slammer IV carry identical mono and braid ratings, so line capacity is not a reason to choose one over the other. The differences are elsewhere:

  • Sealing: IPX5 on the Spinfisher, IPX6 on the Slammer.
  • Drag: the Spinfisher's HT-100 washers sit in a sealed spool; the Slammer uses its own sealed Dura-Drag from the 3500 up and reaches 60 lb at the 10500, against 50 lb here.
  • Bearings: 5+1 on the Spinfisher, 8+1 on the Slammer, which also adds a hydrophobic line roller bearing.
  • Price: the Spinfisher costs less in every shared size. The Slammer starts at $299.95 (for its bail-less 5500).

FAQ

PENN Spinfisher vs Slammer: what is the difference?

They share sizes and line ratings. The Slammer IV has IPX6 sealing versus IPX5, 8+1 bearings versus 5+1, a sealed Dura-Drag with higher max drag in each size, and a higher price. Our three-way comparison with the Battle covers the details.

What size Spinfisher is best for surf fishing?

PENN's Reel Size Guide lists 6500 to 8500 for nearshore, surf and offshore, 9500 for heavy surf and 10500 for extreme surf. For long casts, the Spinfisher VII Long Cast comes in 5500, 6500 and 7500 with the Leveline Oscillation System.

What sizes does the Spinfisher VII come in?

The standard reel comes in 2500, 3500, 4500, 5500, 6500, 7500, 8500, 9500 and 10500, plus bail-less 4500 and 6500. Live Liner and Long Cast versions are sold separately in selected sizes.

Is the Spinfisher VII waterproof?

PENN rates it IPX5 and says the sealing keeps saltwater out of the gearbox and drag system. The HT-100 drag washers are housed in a fully sealed spool.

What changed from the Spinfisher VI to the VII?

The VI used aluminum main gears in the 5500 and smaller sizes. The VII uses brass gearing throughout, made with PENN's upgraded CNC Gear Technology, and kept IPX5 sealing across the range.
