Shimano Vanford A: sizes, weights and how it differs from the Stradic

Illustrative image, not the exact model.
The Vanford A is Shimano's MagnumLite (MGL) spinning reel built around start-and-stop finesse bass techniques and quick hooksets. It arrived for 2024 in six US sizes, from a 4.9 oz 500 to a 7.9 oz C5000XG, at $284.99 to $294.99.
Weight is the whole argument for it. In the 2500 through C5000 sizes the Vanford shares gear ratios, retrieve and line ratings with the Stradic FM, so choosing between them comes down to ounces versus dollars, laid out in Stradic vs Vanford.

Vanford 2000 vs 2500 (and the other sizes)
The two most-searched sizes are further apart than their numbers suggest. The C2000HG is a compact-body reel with a 7 lb drag rating, 6:1 gearing and line ratings from 6 to 10 lb mono. The 2500HG weighs 6.2 oz, has 20 lb of drag and is rated for 8 to 10 lb mono or braid up to 30 lb. If you fish 6 lb line and light lures, the C2000HG is the lighter tool; if you want the drag headroom for bigger fish or heavier braid, the 2500HG is the more flexible choice on paper.
- 500: the ultralight size, rated for 2 to 6 lb mono with 6 lb of drag and the lowest bearing count in the series.
- C2000HG: light line and small lures; the lightest Vanford that still carries 7+1 bearings.
- 2500HG: the default finesse bass size and one of the two sizes Shimano North America names for walleye, pike and trout.
- C3000XG: almost the same weight as the 2500HG, with a faster 6.4:1 ratio and a deeper spool rated for braid up to 40 lb.
- 4000XG and C5000XG: 24 lb of drag in a reel under 8 oz. The 4000 carries the heavier braid rating; the C5000 holds more mono.
Vanford F vs Vanford A
The original Vanford (F code) appeared around ICAST 2020 on a CI4+ body, with a MagnumLite rotor Shimano said cut rotational inertia by 48%, Long Stroke Spool and HAGANE Gear. The 2024 Vanford A keeps the CI4+ body, moves to the second-generation MGL rotor (asymmetrical, with the bail mechanism relocated for balance) and adds the newer drivetrain and drag pieces Shimano also uses on the Stradic FM:
- InfinityXross gear teeth and Infinity Drive main-shaft support.
- DuraCross drag washers.
- The Anti-Twist Fin near the line roller.
Where the Vanford sits among Shimano's MGL reels
Shimano's MagnumLite family runs from the Miravel A ($149.99 to $169.99), which Shimano calls a value-priced entry into MGL and which uses the first-generation rotor, through the Vanford A to the Sustain FK ($389.99 to $399.99) and the Vanquish C, which Shimano calls the lightest reel in its MGL lineup. The Sustain FK adds INFINITYLOOP and is positioned for inshore as well as freshwater.
The Vanford is the cheapest reel in that family to combine the Gen.2 MGL rotor with the full InfinityXross, Infinity Drive and DuraCross package. For a broader view of every price step, see Shimano spinning reels from entry to flagship.

FAQ
Which Vanford size is best for bass?
The 2500HG is the standard pick for finesse bass, which is the use Shimano builds the Vanford A around. Choose the C2000HG if you mainly fish 6 lb line and want the lighter reel, or the C3000XG for a faster retrieve and more braid capacity.
What is the difference between the Vanford 2000 and 2500?
The C2000HG is a compact-body model with a 7 lb drag rating and 6:1 gearing. The 2500HG has 20 lb of drag, a 5.8:1 ratio and a spool rated for heavier line, at 6.2 oz versus 5.5 oz.
Does the Vanford A come in a 1000 size?
No. The Vanford F had a 1000, but the US Vanford A lineup goes from the 500 straight to the C2000HG.
Is the Vanford A worth it over the Stradic FM?
On paper the two match in gear ratio, retrieve and line ratings from the 2500 up, so you are paying for a lighter CI4+ body and the MGL rotor. If weight matters for long days of finesse fishing, the Vanford is the spec-sheet winner; if not, the Stradic costs less.
Is the Vanford A the same reel as the Japanese 24 Vanford?
It shares the same global product ID as Shimano Japan's 24 Vanford. Japan lists 13 models, including shallow-spool and double-handle versions, while the US gets 6. The US 500, C2000HG and 2500HG are not in the Japanese table.
