Shimano Stradic FM vs Vanford A: Same Guts, Different Body

Illustrative image, not the exact model.

The Stradic FM and Vanford A sit next to each other in Shimano's US lineup and share more than most buyers expect. At the 2500 size both list a 5.8:1 gear ratio, 34 in of line per turn, 20 lb of max drag and identical line capacity, and both carry InfinityXross, Infinity Drive, the DuraCross drag and the Anti-Twist Fin.

What separates them is the body. The Stradic FM is built on Shimano's metal HAGANE Body as part of its CoreSolid lineup; the Vanford A uses a CI4+ body with a Gen.2 MagnumLite rotor. The result, on paper, is a lighter Vanford for $284.99 against a heavier, more rigid-bodied Stradic from $234.99.

What the two reels share

Shimano gave both reels the same core upgrades in their latest generations. The Stradic FM (2023) added InfinityXross gearing, Infinity Drive, the DuraCross drag, a labyrinth-type X-Protect and the Anti-Twist Fin. The Vanford A (2024) added InfinityXross, Infinity Drive, DuraCross and the Anti-Twist Fin, but its feature list does not include X-Protect.

Because the gearing and drag packages match, the 2500, C3000, 4000 and C5000 models line up spec for spec. Each pair shares the same gear ratio, retrieve per turn, max drag and published mono and braid capacity. If you pick one size in either series, you get the same line-handling numbers.

Where they differ: body, rotor and weight

The Stradic FM pairs the HAGANE Body, which Shimano describes as a rigid metal body, with cold-forged HAGANE Gear and MicroModule Gear II. The Vanford A uses CI4+, a carbon-fiber-reinforced resin that Shimano says is lighter and more rigid than conventional resin, and an asymmetrical Gen.2 MGL rotor designed for low start-up inertia.

That shows up most clearly in weight. At the C3000 the Vanford A weighs 6.3 oz against the Stradic's 7.9 oz, and at the C5000 the gap is 7.9 oz against 10.2 oz. The Vanford's lightest model, the 500, is 4.9 oz; the Stradic's lightest, the 1000, is 6.5 oz.

Size lineups and intended use

The Stradic FM comes in five US models: 1000HG, 2500HG, C3000XG, 4000XG and C5000XG. The Vanford A drops the 1000 and adds a 500 and a C2000HG. For ultralight work the Vanford's 500 (6 lb max drag) and C2000 (7 lb) are the smaller options, while the Stradic's only small reel is the 1000 at 7 lb.

Shimano positions the Vanford A for start-and-stop finesse bass techniques and quick hooksets. Shimano's official US page for the Stradic FM states no freshwater or saltwater focus and instead calls the Stradic FM the most complete Stradic yet. Verdict: which one to buy

Buy the Vanford A if weight is the priority. For light-line finesse fishing, where you hold the rod all day and work baits with short start-and-stop moves, it delivers the same gearing and drag ratings as the Stradic in a body that is roughly a fifth lighter at the 2500 and C3000 sizes, plus one extra bearing.

Buy the Stradic FM if you want the metal HAGANE Body and X-Protect, or if price matters: it costs $254.99 at the 2500 and C3000 against $284.99 for the Vanford. On paper, the Stradic is the safer all-round choice for anglers who fish around water and spray, since X-Protect is not on the Vanford's list. Comparing against other brands? FAQ

Is the Vanford lighter than the Stradic?

Yes, at every size both offer. The 2500 is 6.2 oz (Vanford A) vs 7.8 oz (Stradic FM), the C3000 6.3 oz vs 7.9 oz, the 4000 7.6 oz vs 9.7 oz and the C5000 7.9 oz vs 10.2 oz, per Shimano's US spec charts.

Do the Stradic and Vanford have the same drag?

Yes. Both list 20 lb of max drag at the 2500 and C3000 and 24 lb at the 4000 and C5000, and both use Shimano's DuraCross drag material.

Is the Vanford a freshwater reel?

Shimano markets the Vanford A for start-and-stop finesse bass techniques, which is freshwater use. The Stradic FM's US page names no freshwater or saltwater focus, but only the Stradic lists X-Protect, Shimano's water-repellent coating and labyrinth seal.

Which is newer, the Stradic FM or the Vanford A?

The Vanford A, which Shimano North America introduced as new for 2024. The Stradic FM won the New Freshwater Fishing Reel division at ICAST 2023. Both received the same InfinityXross, Infinity Drive, DuraCross and Anti-Twist Fin upgrades in those generations.

Is the extra cost of the Vanford worth it?

Only if you value the weight saving. At the 2500 and C3000 sizes you pay $284.99 instead of $254.99 for about a fifth less weight and one more bearing. Gear ratio, retrieve, drag and line capacity do not change.
